Why make the switch to LED lights?

Firstly, what is an LED?

LED – Light Emitting Diode - is a solid-state semiconductor device that converts electrical energy directly into light. There are no moving parts, no gas and no filaments to heat up. A LED semiconductor comprises two regions: one is a positively charged region (P region) and the other is a negatively-charged region (N region). When a current is passed between these two regions, it causes the electrons to move to the opposite region. It is this movement that creates and releases energy. This energy is called a photon and is visible to the human eye, thus we have a Light Emitting Diode.

What are the Benefits?

  • LED downlights use about 80% less energy and are more efficient and durable than incandescent bulbs or halogen light fittings.

  • LEDs require very little to no maintenance as they have a far longer lifespan of up to 10 years or 50,000 hours of use. Halogen bulbs for example only last approximately 1,000-2,000 hours and can easily fail due to other influences, such as power surges or fluctuations.

  • LED lights are of a better light quality at a much lower wattage. Zero heat emission helps reducing the risk of fire, making LEDs safer to use. For example, Halogen lights emit up to 200 AC, whereas LED lights produce only up to 40AC. LEDs are not destructive to fabrics and does not cause fading, so they can be used in any room of the house without having to take precautionary measures.

  • LED’s are made from recyclable materials and use very little energy compared to traditional/incandescent lights, which makes them a very energy efficient solution.

  • Many LED downlights are dimmable via standard trailing edge or universal dimmers.

  • No waiting for filaments or ballasts to heat up. Flick the switch and your room is instantly filled with warm bright light.

  • Compared to traditional lights, LEDs are available in bright, soft or warm whites and some LEDs (for example LED strip lighting or smart bulbs) can also change colours.

  • All LED Lights can also be linked to an app and managed from wherever you are. Check out our Blog for more details on making your home a bit smarter!

How much does it cost?

The cost to replace a light with a new LED fitting ranges between $45 and $85 including installation, subject to confirming the size and type of the existing downlight, hole size and quantity of lights.
